Next Steps

We are all relieved to be out of the ICU- especially Hannah! She is back on 4 South with the nurses that she knows and has built relationships with.  It has made the roller coaster of emotions easier because she has a good support system.  She has undergone several evaluations from teams of doctors and specialties.  After many long conversations, tonight we made the difficult decision that when Hannah is released from CHOP she will enter an in-patient rehab facility.  While she has regained some strength in her legs, she has significant weakness and numbness in her left hip and leg.  She is able to stand and take a few steps with a walker and support person, but she is not able to walk alone and without significant support.  While we are really hopeful and excited that Hannah can use her legs and stand, it is clear that she will need a lot of help and support to re-gain her independence and get back to baseline (as they say in the rehab world).  This was a very difficult decision for us to make and one that Hannah actively participated in.  She wants desperately to go home where she can spend time with her family, but the current status of her abilities make it unsafe for her to go home and is truly frustrating and defeating to our independent girl, so she has committed to go to rehab and work hard to “get her legs back”. She has continued to inspire us as she battles her frustration, anger and sadness and shows her bravery and determination.  She is the patient all of the nurses request and even when they are not assigned to her, multiple nurses, including one special nurse who took care of her in the ICU, come to visit her and cheer her on during their meal breaks.  I am forever indebted to the Ortho nurse practitioners and the nurses who have been her cheering squad, helping to keep her spirits up and helping her to be positive and work her hardest- Jenean

  6. I can imagine that it was very difficult to make the decision to go to a rehab facility, and yet I did several loud fist pumps when I read this update because you are headed in a positive direction. It’s clear from the update that you have to work very hard to take every step… but you’re moving forward. That makes me feel very hopeful for you, although it’s you that has to do the hard work, eh?!

You are clearly a fighter, Missy!

Can you please use some of your superpowers to move the election in the right direction?!

  7. Hannah, first congratulations on being able to stand and walk steps with assistance, that alone is a huge accomplishment!! I also applaud you on realizing that rehab is the best option for you to regain your strength and function. You are such an amazing person and have such a strong will to succeed. You will be walking on your own before you know it. You have an amazing family and you have their strength and love with you every step of the way. Stay positive and know we are all here for you too! ❤️
